Intent
Our aim is to ensure a rich, diverse and high-quality art curriculum. We intend to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. We will enable pupils to:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understanding the historical and cultural development of their art forms
Implementation
We will teach the requirements of the Art National Curriculum. Art lessons will ensure progression within the following:
- Developing ideas
- Mastering art techniques
- Taking inspiration from the greats
Pupils will look at the work of many different artists and artisans from all around the world, from different periods of history until the present day. Pupils will be able to take inspiration by looking at, describing and replicating the work of different artists. Pupils will be able to explore styles and periods to see how artists viewed their world. Pupils will also develop their own ideas and think about how artists and designers use different processes and emotions to develop their work. The pupils will develop a rich vocabulary to enable them to discuss their own and others’ work.
Impact
- Pupils will be able to appreciate and talk confidently, with appropriate vocabulary, about artwork produced by themselves as well as artists and artisans.
- Pupils will produce quality artwork by revisiting and building upon knowledge and skills.
- Pupils’ ‘cultural capital’, i.e. their knowledge and understanding of culture, will be increased by their exposure to a wide range of artists and artisans.
- Pupils’ work will be celebrated and displayed in school.
